Words on Marble

"We have an organisation which closes down schools, shoots faculty teachers, knocks out children and turns most of the north into an educational wasteland. How can we reach the children there? We must first get rid of Boko Haram. We have a contradiction.  How do we get rid of Boko Haram? Violence must become involved. That is a dilemma."

- Professor Wole Soyinka

52nd Independence Anniversary Presidential Broadcast

As part of the activities marking Nigeria’s 52nd Independence Anniversary, President Goodluck Jonathan addressed the nation this morning Monday. The full text of the 52nd Independence speech is available here.

Boko Haram insurgency

  • The Police Command in Kano State on Thursday announced the discovery of a bomb factory and seized cache of arms at Hawan Hotoro Area in Kano metropolis.
  • The Nigerian Joint Military Tasks Force (JTF)’s arrest, on Friday, of an immigration officer, Grema Mohammed, for allegedly being an active member of Boko Haram has led to arrests of a number of other security personnel who have links to the Boko Haram sect.
  • Two suspected members of the extremist Boko Haram sect and 10 others were killed on Sunday in Zaria, Kaduna State, during an early morning military operation in a suspected hideout.

Ravaging flood hits parts of Nigeria

Thousands of people across the country have been internally displaced by the recent floods ravaging the parts of Nigeria. Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Jigawa, Kano, Kogi, Edo and Niger State have been worst hit by the floods.
